España artística y monumental

España artística y monumental | Jenaro Pérez Villaamil

Jenaro Pérez Villaamil is known for his outstanding Romantic-style representations of landscapes and architectural scenes. This collection of lithographs, published between 1842 and 1850 with the name “España artística y monumental” (“Artistic and monumental Spain”), with texts by Patricio de la Escosura, contains 113 litographs with some of the most famous Spanish buildings and places of the time. Such an ambitious project, notably showing Villaamil’s special talent for landscapes and architectural drawing, as well as his expertise and sensitivity to light and color, is considered today the best of his production. Also, it helped disseminate Spanish heritage all around Europe (that Europe of the ‘Grand Tour’ and the ‘great travelers’), as well as the idea of Spanish rich, varied and “exotic” traditions, art and culture.
