Nosce teipsum
Naval Binder. English, late 17th century. Black goatskin; covers decorated with shaped centre- and corner-pieces of massed curlicues, with sprays and small tools. Gilt edges. The work of an unknown binder, called the Naval Binder, because of the number of books bound for wealthy clients in the Admiralty.
