figurine, Sokar hawk
Wooden bird. Items such as these represent Sokar, a god of rebirth. The item is wood with painted gesso. There is a hole in the top of the bird's head and 3 dowel holes in the base. Wooden birds such as these, without human heads, were placed on coffins and Ptah Sokar Osiris figurines from the Late Period (747-332 BC).The base is 143mm long and the artefact 82mm high.
