Jakob Verhülsdonk (1883-1957), the eldest of 16 children, was a farmer. In 1907 the family moved from the Lower Rhine to Schleswig-Holstein. He completed his military training on December 7, 1903 with the hunters on horseback and joined the standing army on August 8, 1914 after the beginning of the war.
