Fritz Herbel from Bochum was one of twelve children, all ten of whom were drafted during the First World War. The family originally came from Letmathe (Iserlohn) in Westphalia. In 1914 Fritz was drafted into the second recruit depot of the Infantry Regiment "Vogel von Falckenstein" (7th Westphalian) No. 56 in Friedrichsfeld near Wesel and ordered to the western front.
