Gérard Fransen entered the army (compulsory military service) on November 16, 1907. He was called up again on August 1, 1914, after which he remained in service until after the war in 1919, as a "carabinier cyclist". In that position he traveled a long way during the war, of which he kept notes in his field book. In November 24, 1918 he returned home to Eksel. In February 1919 he left for Germany …
