Dominique Bigeard was born on December 12, 1887 in Fuilet (Maine-et-Loire). A carpenter by profession, he joined the 16th foot artillery battalion in October 1908. He was mobilized in August 1914 at the 33rd RA depot in Angers. He moved to the 3rd foot artillery regiment, 4th battery, on March 28, 1915 and joined the front on April 28.
