At the end of the war, the apprentice saddler Robert Brubacher was a reserve lieutenant in the Reserve Field Artillery Regiment 33 and battery commander of the 5th battery. He took part in battles on the western front in France, including in Verdun, but later also west of the Chemin des Dames. During the war, Brubacher was awarded the Iron Cross, First and Second Class.
