Friedrich Uhlig was born in 1895 in Hartmannsdorf near Chemnitz in Saxony and lived in Leipzig until 1949 and in Hamburg until his death in 1973. He was a radio operator and later vice sergeant in the Royal Saxon Divisional Radio Department No. 15. He was deployed on the western front and took part in the Battle of Ypres.
