Matija Matej Cerovac was born in 1879 in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in Cerovac near Buzet in Istria. He worked as a railway employee in Trieste and Nabrežina, and after the collapse of the monarchy, the family, Matija and his wife Ana, née Blaževič, moved to the SHS state around 1920 due to the pressure of fascism.
