Lino

The Linotype was the first means of mechanized type composition; prior to this all type was handset. The Linotype produced completed lines of set type. It consisted of a series of magazines, a keyboard for assembling the matrices and a casting mechanism for producing the lines of metal type called slugs.It was primarily used in the newspapers.
