This exhibition has been created by the Visual Contagions project together with the students of the academic course "La mondialisation culturelle au prisme du numérique" held in 2021/22 at the University of Geneva.
The Visual Contagions project is a Swiss National Science Foundation project at the University of Geneva (Switzerland) in collaboration with the Jean Monnet Excellence Center IMAGO (Co-Funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, and the Ecole normale supérieure, Paris). The project, chaired by Professor Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel (Université de Genève), studies the global circulation of images from the print age (c. 1890) to the dawn of Internet. It describes and analyses what and when has circulated, and how certain images have circulated more than others (e.g. in reproductions, copies, pastiches, imitations) and through which channels. The ambition is to understand what makes an image successful, but also to identify how the circulation of images has contributed to the globalisation of cultures, and whether or not it reveals the symbolic domination of certain countries and cultures over others.
