Refugee woman and her dog, France, during World War I. This photograph, attributed to John Warwick Brooke, shows a woman and a small dog sitting on a horse-drawn cart which is loaded high with chairs, bedding and other belongings. There has been little recognition of the plight of refugees on the Western Front, although there are many accounts of the larger numbers of refugees from the Eastern Front. [Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE. A pathetic scene. A refugee with her dog.' A girl from the French village of Canisy is quoted as having said, 'There are cries and sobs from those who go and those who stay, it is the despair of parting and of not knowing whither one goes.'].
