Treasure from the attic

Jean-Marie Coulon est né en 1889 d'un couple de fermier. Il a grandi et vécu dans un petit hameau de montagne isolé et entouré de forêts de sapins au coeur des Monts du Cantal, en Auvergne. En 1914, Jean-Marie est obligé de quitter ses parents, son frère et sa soeur pour aller au front. Malheureusement, il ne reviendra jamais dans son village.
Il rejoint le 52ème Bataillon de Chasseurs Alpins et effectue son premier fait d'armes la même année lors des Opérations d'Alsace. C'est à cette période que Jean-Marie fabrique cet objet remarquable en bois. Après les Opérations de Lorraine, son bataillon se rend dans les Vosges et lance un assaut le 15 juin 1915. Deux jours plus tard, Jean-Marie perd la vie dans la montagne vosgienne, près du lac de Schiessrothried (commune de Metzeral) le jour de son 26ème anniversaire.
A la fin de la guerre, ce briquet en bois est transmis à sa soeur qui le conservera précieusement jusqu'à sa mort.

Il s'agit d'un objet en bois creux dans lequel, probablement, on glissait un briquet. Il imite la forme d'un livre fermé.
Sur une face, il est inscrit "Alsace" ainsi que "19 (un coeur transpercé d'une épée) 14". Sur l'autre face, on voit un cor de chasse à l'intérieur duquel est inscrit le nombre 52, le numéro de son Bataillon. Sur la tranche est inscrit son nom de famille.
