- The French Grand Master Adrien de Wignacourt, was the nephew of the former Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt. He was elected Grand Master after the death of Fra Gregorio Caraffa in 1690. Wignacourt`s first act, assuming the reins of government, was to establish a relief fund for widows and orphans in Malta, who had fallen in the wars against the Turks. He also dispatched plentiful of supplies when an earthquake hit Malta in 1693 and left a lot of damage and distress in the island, thus lessening the misery of the unfortunate inhabitants. The dispute which since the days of Lascaris had raged between the Knight of Malta and the republic of Genoa on the question of naval salutes, was settled amicably through the hard work of Wignacourt and the offices of Pope Innocent XII. Adrien de Wignacourt died on the 4th February 1697.
