- Jesus had said, "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die". According to the Gospel of St. John, in the New Testament, Jesus in the presence of a crowd of Jewish mourners, raised Lazarus of Bethany from the dead. In this painting, Christ lifts his hand upwards, and Lazarus, repeating the gesture, arises from the dead creating commotion all around.
