- An old bearded man, wearing a sack-cloth and supporting himself on a stick, holds his hat out as if he is asking for money. With subdued tonal values that smoothly blend into the dark ground, this canvas seems to be inspired by the realism and chiaro scuro of Caravaggio. This genre was very popular in a seventeenth century Naples and had important developments in Spanish painting of the period.
