This is a statue of Anton de Kom, a Surinamese author, political activist and freedom fighter.
He was born in Paramaribo, Suriname in 1898. In 1920 de Kom moved to Haiti and, in 1921, he left for the Netherlands where he began working one year later.
In 1933, while in Suriname, De Kom was arrested and sent to the Netherlands without trial and exiled from his native country.
