Before the war, Curt Germer (1887-1974) ran his own general agency in Hanover. His mother died early, leaving behind two sons and three daughters. Since his father, a senior magistrate, could not raise five children alone, he sent Curt to the cadet corps in Oranienburg from the age of eight.
