Double Portrait of Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687) and Suzanna van Baerle (1599-1637)

In the seventeenth century, it was customary for marriage portraits to consist of two separate paintings. This double portrait of Constantijn Huygens and Suzanna van Baerle is an exception to this rule. It is remarkable that he is shown in profile, while she bends forward slightly to look at us. The couple are holding a sheet of music, as a sign of the harmony in their marriage. The portrait was painted by Van Campen, the architect of the Mauritshuis.
