Portolan atlas of sea-charts

For the Medici. Italian, c. 1565. Red goatskin over wooden boards. Decorated all over in elaborate interlaced gilt tooling, with red and black mosaic. At the centre of the front cover is a seascape painted in grisaille; on the back are the arms of the Medici impaling those of Austria. The doublures similarly decorated with interlace.
