This photograph was taken in the 1870s by Joseph
Beglar for the Archaeological Survey of India. It shows the
Chamkatti mosque in a ruinous and overgrown condition. The mosque
was built in the Bengali sultanate capital of Gaur on today's
Bangladeshi India border. It dates to the late fifteenth to early
