Reclining Female Nude, known as ‘La Négresse couchée’

A woman with her back turned to us piques our curiosity. What does she look like? What is she trying to protect? The darkness enveloping her only adds to the mystery. Moreover, the actual colour of her skin is unclear. Is she a white woman swathed in shadow, or a black woman with highlights on her hips and feet?
