Arrival of a Portuguese ship

The annual arrival of Portuguese ships in the harbour of Nagasaki was a familiar theme in art around 1600. On this pair of screens, produce is being unloaded while the captain and his crew disembark. A Jesuit priest and two Japanese Christians greet him, identifiable by the prayer beads they are holding.
