I had lived in Melbourne all my life and was really settled, with my own apartment, a dog, a great job, friends and family. Then one sunny summer afternoon, I met a tall, dark and handsome Frenchman by chance. That afternoon my life changed forever! And it began with a French kiss before we even said a word to each other... Alex was just in Melbourne as one stop of his travels around Australia, and I certainly wasn't expecting to meet the love of my life.
Alex basically moved in with me that night, we got engaged after two weeks and married after three months, and decided to travel the world together.
So I sold my flat, quit my job, did some lovely Australian things like scuba-diving in the Great Barrier Reef, then we flew to Paris to spend time with Alex's family, and decided to settle in Amsterdam together.
A year and a half later, life gets better and better every day and somehow I feel like I'm falling in love more every day, and I just can't believe I'm here in Europe! The Netherlands is a wonderful place and we are loving our lives, working hard, travelling a lot, and keeping in touch with all the people we love. We both feel free and happy, and are very fortunate to have migrated here by choice.
My stepfather Peter took this photograph of myself and my new husband on our wedding day, the 24th March - a special date as both our birthdays are 24, and the number just keeps recurring throughout our lives.
I never thought I'd live in another country, but couldn't think of a better place to live, and it already feels like home even though we've only been here a few months. My migration story is truly a love story.
