The Court of Aldermen and Common Council of the City of London
The Court of the City of London Aldermen was
established in 1200. Aldermen were elected representatives of city
wards, "sworn to take counsel on behalf of the City, together with
the Mayor." The court had responsibilities over the city livery
companies and had the right to present petitions directly to the
Crown. They were also involved in the election of the Lord Mayor.
