Alfred Backhouse was a Quaker, banker and philanthropist. He built Rockliffe Hall in county Durham (designed by Alfred Waterhouse) which is now an hotel. Backhouse was also a photographer. See number 120 in the same collection for a photograph of his brother, Edward Backhouse.
