Jean Cocteau discovered the Bassin d’Arcachon in 1917 when he was invited there by the Bordeaux painter, André Lhote. Cocteau was genuinely surprised to find an area still relatively deserted and bathed in sunshine. He took up residence in the Hôtel Chanteclerc, a small and rather rudimentary family guesthouse.
