Joseph Strutt Memorial, Arboretum Square

The Arboretum was given to the town by Joseph Strutt Esq. He commissioned John Claudius Loudon to design the space, which was laid out between 1839 and 1840. It is thought to be the earliest public park in the country, and holds a great variety of trees. This memorial to Joseph Strutt stands above the Italianate gateway designed by Duesbury in 1850.
