Original Bridge Footings?, Shardlow, 1966

These are the original footings and foundations of the bridge over the river Trent named after the local hamlet Cavendish Bridge. This bridge carried the main A6 trunk road from London to Carlisle. The bridge itself was swept away in 1948 by severe floods and replaced for many years by a Bailey Bridge erected by the Army and controlled by traffic lights.
