St Mary's Bridge Chapel interior - prior to restoration

This chapel (St. Mary-on-the Bridge) is the oldest chapel in Derby and one of only six such 'bridge' chapels remaining in the country. These chapels were built to provide revenue by the collection of tolls from those persons who wished to cross the bridge as well as providing a place for people travelling to pray for safe journeys. The Bridge Chapel was built c 1275 and restored after 1930.
