r: "A woman in a blue robe seated on a sofa" v: "Illegible" c.1898

Glass mount; 34.8 x 24.6 s. with a butterfly; u.r. CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) It was initially thought that the model for this work was Ethel Warwick, but Rosalind Birnie Philip later suggested that it could be Eva Carrington. Both models were frequently used by Whistler. The same blue robe and purple cap also appear in "A draped model reclining" (MacDonald 1995 (1607), GLAHA 46285). The lines of the drapery in this work are confused by those of an earlier drawing underneath. There are considerable signs of rubbing and scraping out.
Birnie Philip Gift 1935 - not lendable.
