"Grenat et or: Le Petit Cardinal" c.1900-1901

Gilded reeded, 80.8 x 61.5 x 7.7 None CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) Whistler painted several portraits of Lillie Pamington, two of which can be found in the Hunterian collection (See GLAHA 46366/ 46375), however nothing is known about her life. The title of this work may be translated as "Garnet - Red and Gold: The Little Cardinal" and refers to the colour and style of the sitter's cap. It is believed that this work was painted at Whistler's Fitzroy Street studio, London.
