The Major - Rosalind Birnie Philip

RH Inscr in pencil below plate r.: "THE MAJOR - ROSALIND BIRNIE PHILIP" CRE WHISTLER, Beatrix; (English; 1857-1896) Many of Beatrix Whistler's portrait etchings are of family and friends, who were easily accessible and compliant models. Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) was Beatrix Whistler's youngest sister, and Whistler's executrix, ward and personal assistant. His nickname for her, with West Point associations, was 'Major' - Whistler, of course, was the 'General'. Whistler bequeathed his estate to her. This included the collection of his wife's paintings, prints and drawings, as well as personalia. In this etching, Rosalind Philip seems to have a bow in her hair and is probably in her teens, making the date of this etching after Beatrix's marriage to Whistler in 1888.
