Mat

West Africa Congo One of 4 mats, noted in the 1989-1990 Annual Report as 'Four Bride-Price Mats' from the Congo. They were collected by Professor Frank Willett, an authority on West African culture, particularly that of Nigeria. This mat shows a repeating geometric pattern of 5 double-lozenges, each composed of four red triangles. The sixth pattern is composed only of two downward-facing triangles. There is an edging or 'hem' pattern in red and black pigment.
