Study for "Tillie: A Model" c.1870-1873

Glass mount; 34.7 x 24.6 s. with a butterfly; c.r. CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) The model for this drawing is Tillie Gilchrist. This drawing may be a study for the left hand figure in the oil , "The Three Girls", or the etching, "Tillie: A Model" (Kennedy 117). It may even have been used for both. Other related drawings are in the Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, UK (MacDonald 1995 (367,368,370)).
