A Chateau in Bruges

61.4 x 76.4 s. b. l. "D GAULD"; label on verso "A Chateau in France / by / David Gauld / Ian Macnicol / Fine Art Dealer / 48 West George Street / Glasgow G2 1BP" CRE GAULD, David; (Scottish; 1865-1936) In the 19th century, British travellers on their way to view the battlefield of Waterloo rediscovered Bruges and spread its fame as a perfectly preserved medieval town. Its look is classic, but much of the city was actually redesigned in the 19th century by British architects keen to spread the Gothic revival. Gauld chose to focus his composition on one of the five remaining city gates, the Gentpoort.
