Panel of lettering: "THERE IS HOPE IN HONEST ERROR..." 1901

RU s.d. b.r. "CHAS R / MACKINTOSH / GLASGOW / 1901"; printed on recto b.l. "CH. MACKINTOSH / GLASGOW" DES MACKINTOSH, Charles Rennie; (Scottish; 1868-1928) The format of the lettering, with its bold forms and unconventional word breaks, set in a square border, is closely related to the graphics of Mackintosh's contemporaries in the Vienna Secession. The quotation, 'There is Hope in Honest Error, None in the Icy Perfection of the Mere Stylist', is one Mackintosh had long admired, from the English Arts and Crafts architect and designer, J.D. Sedding. (See also GLAHA 41519, GLAHA 41520, GLAHA 41521).
