Glass mount; 34.8 x 24.6 (1) s. with a butterfly; c.r. (2) Inscr. in an unknown hand; "No. 5" CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) This is one of many studies of a model leaning on a rail or balcony. The butterfly was probably added c.1874. Albert Moore and Frederick Leighton made similar preparatory studies for their paintings.
