This specimen is from William Hunter's collection. The specimens were utilised by Fabricius describing new species. The collection contains types from other contemporary entomologists such as Olivier and Drury.
While on the Endeavour, Banks collected insects at Madeira as well as elsewhere around the globe. On his return Fabricius was able to describe the various new species. He also kept some specimens and re-distributed others to Hunter's cabinet when there were sufficient numbers. There is a specimen in London and one in Kiel of this species. They may all qualify as part of the original series and therefore possible syntypes of *maderae*.
