"Cuckoo Flower, Chiddingstone" April 1910

RU s.d. and inscr. in pencil b.r. "CUCKOO FLOWER / CHIDDINGSTONE / APRIL 1910 / CRM MMM" CRE MACKINTOSH, Charles Rennie; (Scottish; 1868-1928) Cuckoo Flower well illustrates Mackintosh's adherence to the European tradition of scientific botanical illustration. The specimen is centrally placed against a plain ground. The structure is clearly expressed and significant details are enlarged to enable better understanding of their form. The main subject Cuckoo Flower or Lady's Smock (Cardamine pratensis), is a common plant of damp grassy places. To the right of this an unidentified flower has been included, perhaps a wild orchid. At the middle right are two flowers of an unidentified plant, perhaps Ground-ivy (Glechoma hederacea).
