Mouth gag

STAINLESS (stamped on the side of one limb) J.GARDNER&SON EDINBURGH (stamped onto the opposite limb) 5 P.NCL2 (engraved on the reverse of the limbs) MANU Gardner Early 20th century Edinburgh Scotland This is a gag in the style of Buxton's's Gag used to separate the jaws and opening the mouth. It is fitted with a ratchet for fixing it in place and is used in dentistry, surgery and anaesthesia. In extreme cases such instruments have been used for force feeding.
