Sketchbook of travels in Scotland and a tour to Kent: pp. 16 - 17 Plant study, Ascog, Bute c. 1894

inscr. b.l."ASCOG" CRE MACKINTOSH, Charles Rennie; (Scottish; 1868-1928) This unnamed study, probably representing a foxglove (digitalis purpurea), is one of ten flower drawings in the sketchbook. It was probably drawn on the same trip as 53012/7. Mackintosh's interest in this genre stems partly from the design courses he took at the Glasgow School of Art where, along with other contemporary art schools, the study and analysis of plant form was an essential element in the training of designers. The pages have been numbered inaccurately in an unknown hand as pages 18 - 19.
