Tantalus Cup

MANU Unsigned. pre 1756 This instrument is an intermittent siphon or tantalus cup so named after the Greek hero Tantalos who was tortured by thirst. This example is unadorned and is in the form of a glass vase with a hole in the base. A glass tube shaped like a question mark is fixed in the hole by a cork ring. The glass fluoresces green under ultra violet light.
