"Wild West, Buffalo Bill" 1887

(2) s. on tab with butterfly and inscr. in pencil; "imp" CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) PRINT WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) Whistler made a number of etchings to mark the Jubilee year of Queen Victoria in 1887 and this image numbered among them. ?Buffalo Bill?s Wild West Show? was at that time performing at Earls Court, London, and the etchings inspired by the production were the only American themed etchings that Whistler ever made. The etching plate for this work is also in the Hunterian collection (GLAHA 50398). (See also GLAHA 46917/46919).
