"The Storm" 1861

Royal s. in plate; b.r. "Whistler 1861" CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) In this image Whistler has used thick clusters of incised lines to evoke an atmosphere of stormy turmoil. The figure hurrying across the foreground of the composition is Matthew W. Ridley, a fellow artist of Whistler's. This is a weak impression which was possibly printed from a cancelled plate.
