"Christ Before Caiaphas"

182.9 x 132.9 CRE CAMBIASO, Lucas; (Italian; 1527-1585) 'Accepted in lieu of tax by H M Government and allocated to the Hunterian Art Gallery 1997'
LABEL "It is not yet known for which church this altarpiece was painted. Following the Biblical narrative, the Genoese artist set the subject of Christ before the High Priest in the middle of the night. The use of the candles as a light source to illuminate the bearded Caiaphas, whilst leaving the other faces in deep shadow, predates the works of Caravaggio (1573-1610)."
