"After the Sale, Hounsditch" c.1886-1887

Royal (1) s. in plate with butterfly; c.l.
(2) Watermark; a coat of arms CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) PRINT WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) Spitalfields and Hounsditch, in the East End of London, were at the heart of the used clothing district in Whistler?s lifetime. Whistler was fond of spending time in the poorer parts of the city where he made images that celebrated the energy and character of the area, rather than the poverty many people faced. This etching was intended for the projected 'Little London Set'. The etching plate for this work is also in the Hunterian collection (GLAHA 50369).
Birnie Philip Bequest, 1958.
