"Venus" c.1898

Glass mount; 34.8 x 24.6 None CRE WHISTLER, James McNeill; (American; 1834-1903) According to legend, the goddess Venus was said to have "sprung from the foam of the sea near the island Cythera". Although the title was never associated with this drawing during Whistler's lifetime, there is every reason to assume it was correct. Whistler drew and painted several nudes which have acquired the title of 'Venus'.
Birnie Philip Gift 1935 - not lendable.
