"Limbs" 1941

RH s in pencil "S W Hayter"; numbered "3/30" and inscr. with title "Limbs" CRE HAYTER, Stanley William; (English; 1901-1988) NFA assisted purchase. The prints which Hayter made early in the 1940s were small-scale and monochrome, exploring abstract themes, some of which are related to studies of insects, seen in close-up in various menacing compositions. These interesting and surprisingly rare works - only 3 impressions of "Limbs" are recorded - contrast dramatically with the much larger colour works of the late 1940s, of which the Hunterian possesses a few important examples.
